Why I’m Still Using Boom Cards for Speech Therapy

boom cards for speech therapy activities

I have a confession. I am still using my Boom Cards almost every day. I am not using every single set that I used to use, but I do have some go-to decks that I use pretty much daily.

I’m going to let you in on another secret. I have a terrible memory and my brain is always in 2359812 places at once. Some mornings, I’m trying to pack my work bag while also getting 3 kids ready and out the door. I can’t get it together enough to make sure I have all the materials for each client I am going to see that day. So I know if I grab my iPad, I won’t be missing anything for sure!

Last confession. The kids find the iPad super engaging. I hate to admit this. But sometimes, it’s easier to use digital speech therapy activities to keep their interest! 🤫

So, with all that being said, I’m going to show you my favorite Boom Cards that I am still using almost daily for no prep, grab-and-go speech therapy activities!

Minimal pairs Boom Cards for speech therapy activities

Minimal Pairs Boom Cards

I always have a bunch of students working on minimal pairs therapy activities for phonological disorders. And to be honest, sometimes I don’t feel like lugging around a ton of minimal pairs card decks. So, having this bundle of Minimal Pairs Boom Cards is life-saving and bag-space-saving! I know I have no prep final consonant deletion, initial consonant deletion, fronting/backing, voicing, stopping, gliding, and cluster reduction minimal pairs cards right at my finger tips. I also love that I can get a ton of speech sound trials, AND use the decks to help students self-monitor and rate their own sound productions. The decks also include placement visuals and metaphors for the different speech sounds that are super helpful for the students!

Cycles Approach Boom Cards

Again, this saves me from juggling a ton of different cards decks when I am using the Cycles Approach to treat phonological disorders. These Cycles Approach Boom Cards target all primary patterns for the Cycles Approach for speech therapy: final consonant deletion, initial consonant deletion, S clusters, fronting/backing, and gliding. The mini stickers are super engaging for the students and help me get a ton of speech sound trials easily! I can also Fast Pin these Boom Cards and send them as easy speech therapy homework! It’s great because the student is already familiar with the layout of the Boom Cards and the Cycles Approach target words, so homework is aligned with what they are doing in therapy.

Troll in a Bowl Boom Cards

If you have not heard about Troll in a Bowl, I highly suggest you head over to your Boom Learning account now and look him up. He has a TON of speech sound activities in engaging game formats. The students love the competition aspect of these Boom Decks. If the words included in the game are too difficult, I just sub in a more appropriate word on the fly. Easy peasy. AND, often when he releases a new product, he offers it FOR FREE for the first 24 hours. It’s simply incredible. Free articulation activities? Sign me up. Please, do yourself a favor and check these Boom Cards out.

Memory Match Boom Cards

I like these Memory Match Articulation Boom Cards for the same reason I like the Minimal Pairs Boom Cards and the Cycles Approach Boom Cards. I travel. And sometimes I just don’t want to bring “all the things” with me. These decks are easy grab-and-go options to have a bunch of speech sound activities ready! They include 18 different phonemes; and each deck includes all phonemes in all word positions as a separate card, as well as a mixed position card for each phoneme, too! I chose the target words carefully. So no weird articulation words or articulation words that are too difficult to say (I’m looking at you “thong” and “flamingo” 🙄). I even made it so the cards will randomize each time you play, so you ALWAYS get a new memory game. You know how kids memorize where the matches are? Well, that won’t happen with these 🙌🏻. I made a few different themes and plan to make more. So if you are into themed speech therapy, these are a great add-on to your collection.

That’s It!

Those are the Boom Cards that are still in constant rotation in my speech therapy activities. Drop me a comment below and let me know if you are still using Boom Cards in your speech therapy!
